The Role
The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is seeking a qualified and experienced Environmental Specialist to provide expert guidance and oversight on all matters relating to environmental compliance and sustainability. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring SARAO’s infrastructure projects and operations are aligned with national environmental legislation, policies, and best practices. This role requires a proactive individual who can lead environmental planning, conduct assessments, and engage with regulatory authorities and stakeholders.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7) in:

Environmental Science

Environmental Management
-
Natural Sciences
-
Or a related field

A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field will be an advantage.
Experience
-
At least 5 years of experience in an environmental management or compliance role.

Proven track record of managing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), and compliance monitoring.

Experience working on infrastructure or large-scale projects in environmentally sensitive areas is desirable.

Familiarity with South African environmental legislation, including NEMA, NEMBA, and associated regulations.
Skills and Competencies

Strong understanding of environmental compliance frameworks and sustainability principles.

Excellent report writing, research, and analytical skills.

Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities, including with regulatory bodies and communities.

Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.

Proficiency in MS Office and relevant environmental assessment software/tools.
