The Role
The South African State Theatre invites dynamic, professional, and service-oriented individuals to apply for the position of Usher. Ushers play a critical front-of-house role, ensuring patrons have a welcoming, safe, and enjoyable theatre experience. Reporting to the Front of House Manager, successful candidates will provide assistance to audiences before, during, and after performances, support safety protocols, and uphold the theatre’s standards of customer care and presentation.
Key Responsibilities:

Welcome and direct patrons to their seats with courtesy and professionalism

Monitor audience conduct and enforce house rules respectfully

Provide accurate information about facilities, performances, and emergency procedures

Assist patrons with special needs, including accessible seating and guidance

Distribute programs and promotional material as required

Ensure safety by following evacuation procedures and alerting security or management to emergencies

Maintain cleanliness and order in auditorium and public areas before and after shows

Assist with crowd control and entry/exit during high-traffic events

Perform other front-of-house duties as assigned by management
Requirements

Grade 12 / Matric certificate or equivalent
-
Must be between the ages of 18–35 years
-
Previous experience in customer service, hospitality, or front-of-house theatre roles is advantageous

Ability to communicate clearly and confidently in English (multilingualism an advantage)

Professional, presentable, and punctual

Friendly, helpful, and respectful disposition

Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays

Physically fit and able to stand for extended periods

Team player with good interpersonal skills

Passion for the performing arts and cultural engagement
